Our Mauritian adventure

After a 4 hours flight to Johannesburg, staying the night at the hotel airport, and then another 4 hours flight we finally made it to Mauritius!

From the moment we left the airport, and started heading south of the island, the clear blue waters and sandy beaches and sugar cane fields surrounding the islands were remarkable.

We spent the first couple of days on the beach and on the pool in Le Morne area south of the island.

We then headed to Flic En Flac. And of course we had to venture into a Safari ride at the Casella nature reserve . There was a lot to see and so little time. The only thing we missed out on was meeting the lion cubs and walking with the lions because of the young age of the kids.

We got to experience viewing more than a hundred species of birds , parrots and ducks and turkeys just casually strolling around us.

Meeting the giant tortoises as well as feeding the animals at the petting zoo. Karim got to experience feeding the goats, gazelles and donkeys as well as the giraffes.

He got particularly disgusted when feeding the giraffes as their huge and long black tongues were licking his entire hand along with the food. He was not impressed!

We then went on the Safari ride. We got to see zebras, buffalos , rhinoceros as well as feisty ostriches that kept on pecking on the bus rails. The kids loved it! I was particularly proud of my 6 year old who kept on harassing the guide with questions about the animals.

We were then able to walk around the enclosure of the lions , tigers and baby cubs.

The next day we woke up really early for another meeting with an early riser. The dolphins.

We took a boat for a tour on the coast of the island where dolphins are known to hang around. Others were there also in the  water taking a closer look. The excitement and the thrill of the kids were on high as we were roaming around and running after the dolphins jumping up and down in the water. Impressive!

We also took a trip to a local weekly market to buy some famous local produce like chillis and vanilla. But we were disappointed, we didn't even see any sold there. So we went to a supermarket and bought them from there. I even did some groceries shopping of the things i miss in Angola to bring back with me. You got to do what you got to do!

All in all Mauritius is a great destination for families with young kids! They were blown away by all the animals encounters they had. Over the moon by all the chocolate crepes they were lucky to eat and just happy to chill and cool down and play on the white sandy beaches. The scenery was truly like the ones you see on the brochures!
